Is It Safe For My Cat To Eat Dry Dog Food?
OK, I messed up. I was scrolling through so many pages on Amazon, trying to find the brand of dry food my cat loves, but I wasn't seeing it. I finally recognized the familiar picture and hit the 'buy now' option. It got delivered today. To my surprise, I was pouring it into the container I keep it in, and my cat was more interested in it than she's ever been (she's spoiled and hooked on wet food). At first, I didn't really think anything of it. Then, I noticed that it said something about dogs on the packaging. I thought, 'that's weird that they talking about dogs on a cat food package.'
Duuuuhhhhh...A Light Went Off
Oh $#!%, I ordered DOG FOOD. In my defense, I did type 'Beyond Dry Cat Food' into the search bar, so I wasn't even thinking that the results could have included dog food. I should have just gotten my lazy ass up and went to Wegmans or Tops. I wouldn't have been able to make the same mistake in the grocery store. After my initial 'oh crap' moment, I settled into my 'welp, we're here now' mode. I poured some on her plate and she readily gobbled it up. But, my cat is greedy, so does that really mean anything? And on top of that, is it even safe for her to eat dog food?
Is It Safe For Cats To Eat Dog Food
According to PetMD.com, it's not a good idea to regularly feed cats dry dog food because the mix of nutrients is different. But, thankfully, if you don't read like me and end up asking the question of whether you're OK giving your kitty doggy kibble,
The short answer is yes, a cat can eat a small amount of dog and not have any toxicity or lasting effects. However, the longer answer dives into the species-specific differences between our feline and canine friends. While a nibble of stolen dog food will not harm cats, it will definitely not help them achieve their best possible health.
I am relieved to find out that I did not unintentionally poison my little greedy angel face. I figured I'd share because I can't be the only idiot who has done this lol.
