Expect to see some snow on your Friday morning commute in Western New York.

Just when you thought winter was over, the snow will be back soon enough in Western New York, and it’s going to hit mostly the northeast regions as we approach the weekend.

Expect an impact of snow showers on early Friday morning, covering from the south to north over Western New York. This storm will hit more of the Southtowns compared to the previous storm.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the following counties on these days:

  • Niagara and Orleans counties from 1 a.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Friday.
  • Erie, Genesee and Wyoming counties from 10 p.m. Thursday until 4 p.m. Friday.
  • Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties from 9 p.m. Thursday until 4 p.m. Friday.
  • Potter and McKean counties in Northern PA from 9pm until 1pm Friday.

While it’s likely that most locations will see snow during the whole storm, some towns in the Southern Tier could see a mix of sleet and rain with snow on Friday, leading to both snow and ice accumulations.

The predicted snow total for the upcoming storm is anywhere between 4 to upwards of 7 inches of snow.

But every time there is a snow storm in Western New York, it makes you wonder how the Buffalo Niagara airport handles the sudden influx of snow.

It’s really simple, actually. The airport uses a snow melting machine.

Thanks to the Storm Team at WGRZ, there is a video where you can see the machine in action. Check it out below.

January was a rather snowy month in Buffalo with just over 52 inches of snow, making it one of the snowiest months on record, and major props go out to the airport for clearing the snow as quickly as they can.
