Excessive Heat Forces Schools To Close Early In Buffalo

Summer-like weather is on the way to Western New York, and temperatures are going to soar to a point where officials all over the region may be forced to make some changes in the way things are done for the rest of the month this year.

It seems the hot temperatures on the way to Western New York have caused officials from the Buffalo Public Schools to issue an announcement that surprised several people in the region.

With temperatures expected to be in the mid-to-high 90s this week and several schools in Buffalo lacking adequate air conditioning, the BPS will utilize half-day classes for the remainder of the school year.

he Buffalo Public Schools has decided to implement four half days next week for students in all Early Childhood, elementary, and middle school grade levels (Pre K- Grade 8) on Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21. Lunch will be served to all students prior to their dismissal. Students will be released three and a half hours earlier (10:55 a.m., 11:45 a.m., and 12:35 p.m.) than their typical dismissal times.

Buffalo's High School students have Regents exams this coming week and will not be in school for the entire day due to their exam schedule. When students are in school, the BPS has stated they will have water stations placed throughout the district.

Buffalo isn't the only district that has decided to release kids early from class. Williamsville Central follows suit on Tuesday, June 18th, and Thursday, June 20th.
