How Stressed Are The People of Buffalo
The modern world is stressful. Many will say that it's more stressful today than in years past and that the pace of life in 2023 is causing many to struggle daily to keep up in life.
While Buffalo is a great place to live, perhaps even the best city in New York, it can have its share of stressful things that will cause people to need to take a step back and pause. But exactly how stressful is Buffalo, and how does Buffalo compare to other cities in New York and the entire country?
What Is Stress?
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), stress is a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation.
Stress is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. Everyone experiences stress to some degree. The way we respond to stress, however, makes a big difference to our overall well-being.
-World Health Organization
The impacts of stress can have an effect on everything we do in life. The results can be so life-changing that organizations like Roswell Park have been doing tons of research on stress and how it impacts our body and mind.
What Causes Stress?
Stress historically has been caused by all sorts of things like daily life and relationships. However, lately, it's been exacerbated by COVID-19, rampant inflation, and countless other things.
In New York, we have all of those things, along with a few other issues tossed on top like crime and sky-high taxes just to name a couple, but where do we rank when compared to other places around the country?
What's The Most Stressed City In The Country?
According to a recent report by WalletHub, which ranked the 182 largest cities in America and rated them by more than 30 different metrics. After looking at different things like crime and safety, employment opportunities and unemployment rates, incomes, and the general health of the people in an area, it seems that one Rustbelt city comes out as the most stressed city in the entire nation.
Cleveland comes out as the nation's most stressed city, with high amounts of financial, family, and health & safety issues; with Detroit coming in a close 2nd place.
Where Does Buffalo and Other New York Cities Rank?
Four of New York's cities found themselves on this list and surprisingly, Buffalo is not the most stressed city in New York State.
Rochester, which ranks 37th nationally, is the most stressed city in New York, with New York City coming in right behind Rochester in 38th Place.
Buffalo sits as the 42nd most stressed city in America, which sets it 3rd in New York. Yonkers is the less stressed city in New York coming in at 124th place nationally.
I'm only a little surprised by this, having been to Rochester and NYC many times, I can agree that they land in the right spot.
