Buffalo Police Moving Forward On Changes To Nightlife On Chippewa Street

As the public debate rages on about what should be done about the increase in crime that Western New York has seen around its various neighborhoods and districts, the Buffalo Police Department is moving forward with a plan to restrict access to the Chippewa entertainment district in downtown Buffalo.

At the Buffalo Common Council meeting that occurred on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, members of Buffalo's government debated different initiatives that could be used to curb some of the crime and violence we're seeing on the streets. One of those proposals, which would restrict the ability of people under the age of 21 from going into the district, needs more research from the city's law department.

However, that is not stopping the Buffalo Police Department from ramping up various restrictions in and around West Chippewa Street on the weekends.

Chippewa Street Nightlife To New Restrictions

Starting this weekend, on Friday, July 24, 2026, until further notice, those who are looking to go party downtown or grab a drink on the Chip Strip are going to make sure they take into account new restrictions on where they can drive and where they can walk.

Between the hours of 8 pm and 4 am, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Chippewa Street will be closed to vehicle traffic, and no parking will be allowed on the streets either during the weekend.

Officials hope that taking these measures, along with putting up physical barriers on the street to help control foot traffic, will help keep loitering and other illegal activity down.

While city officials look for legal ways to further restrict the area, some businesses are applauding the efforts while others are against it.
