To say that Buffalo and Western New York have had a wild ride on the weather rollercoaster would be a serious understatement. Two back-to-back Lake Effect Snowstorms hit the area, shutting roads, schools, and businesses for several days.

While it finally looks like we're going get a break from the snow machine, now officials are looking towards clean-up and recovery from the deadly snowstorm that has unfortunately claimed three lives. To help aid in the cleanup and to keep kids safe, several schools around the region are shutting down on Friday for the 4th consecutive day.

Due to the record amounts of snow caused by the snowstorm, the Buffalo Public Schools will be closed on Friday, January 19. Multiple neighborhoods, especially south of Broadway, still have streets that are unsafe for school buses to travel on, unpassable sidewalks, and high snowbanks that make it dangerous for students to walk to and from school. All students and staff are to stay home. All Saturday and weekend events are also canceled. Those in need of assistance should call 211 for food needs and emergency shelter information or call 988 for mental health resources.

Many Western New York Schools To Will Remain Closed On Friday

Today's announcements mark now the 4th straight day that school districts in the 716 are keeping their doors closed. Since Monday, January 15, 2024, was a Federal Holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., some students have had an entire week off school.

So on Friday, January 19, 2024, schools from Buffalo to Grand Island To Amherst and all points around are going to keep the kids home for an old-school snow day.

While primary and secondary schools will be closed on Friday, it appears that local colleges and universities will open their doors for the first time this week.

You can get a complete list of closed schools on our School Closing page.

The good news in all of this is that it appears that the lake effect snow machine has finally shut down, and we should have a short reprieve over the weekend in Buffalo.
