"I am submitting this letter to give my strongest recommendation for Petty Officer Second Class Shane T. Chesnes for the Basil Car’s Vehicle for Vets Final Car giveaway. 2. I met Petty Officer Chesnes upon his arrival to Navy Operational Support Center Buffalo in 2016. Unlike most transferring Sailors, his situation was heart felt and different, one that most of us could never imagine. During his previous assignment in San Diego California 2015, he arrived full of spirit and ready to lead his command in to the horizons of the latest mission. During this time his wife was expecting their third child whom would be his first daughter. Without warning, his wife experienced complications with her pregnancy and through the birth of his daughter, lost her life. Petty Officer Chesnes was left as a single father to raise not only a new born but also two sons. The pain that this young man felt and continues to feel has not only affected the spirits his command in San Diego, but touched the hearts of many through the Navy. In order to assist Petty Officer Chesnes in his hardship, he was reassigned to be closer to the family in Buffalo New York where he continues to receive their support along with the support and comfort of the Staff and Selected Reservist of Navy Operational Support Center Buffalo. Through the past few months, I have watched this young man grow and continue to excel with the world on his back. Even with all that has occurred; he willingly provided his own vehicle to his brother in order to provide his family with a means of transportation to avoid additional financial burdens. No one truly will understand what he feels but one thing that is present the unwavering dedication he has for his daughter, sons and the legacy of his wife. His current situation seems to become difficult with each change of the day where he lacks transportation to take care of daily needs of not only himself but his family as well. Surrounded by memories of his wife, even in the faces of his children, I often think, what could help this young man in a time so difficult. 3. Petty Officer Chesnes work ethic, integrity, and professional knowledge continue to flourish despite the situation that life has gave him. He is an invaluable dedicated asset that deserves such an opportunity that your program provides. Grant this young man this opportunity and I promise not only will this military service member be grateful but the hearts of his children as well!
