Lauryn Hill, who was facing jail time for tax evasion, was given a reprieve on Monday (April 22), as a judge postponed her sentencing in the case.

According to NJ.com, the Grammy-winning rapper failed to pay Uncle Sam $1.8 million in income earned between 2005 and 2007. Although Hill promised the judge to pay back about $554,000 in restitution, she has so far paid only $50,000 to date.

United States Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arelo was not happy with the former Fugees member and scolded her during the hearing. “This is not someone who stands before the court penniless,” she said. ‚ÄúThis is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes.”

Judge Arelo scheduled another hearing for May 3. The 37-year-old mother of six now has two weeks to pay $504,000 or else face a three-year prison sentence.

Hill’s attorney, Nathan Hochman informed the judge that his client has signed a $1 million recording deal with Sony Music and is also planning to take out a $650,000 loan to pay her outstanding tax bill. He is asking the judge to give Hill probation instead of prison.

Hill’s legal struggles continue to mount as a landlord is suing her for not paying rent on her Newark, N.J., home.
