Today (Feb. 13), Kendrick Lamar was honored by his hometown with the key to the city of Compton. K. Dot was bestowed the honor by Mayor Aja Brown at the Martin Luther King Monument at Civic Center Plaza during the outdoor event which was was streamed live on Periscope.

"Kendrick Lamar is a phenomenal artist whose work has served as a catalyst to raise a new level of consciousness for this generation," said Compton Mayor Aja Brown in a statement before the ceremony. "His message challenges the status quo and motivates listeners to rethink our society's institutions."

"Kendrick Lamar is one of Compton's greatest ambassadors," said City Councilwoman Janna Zurita. "We in Compton are proud of him because he is a symbol of what our city really is -- a place where dreams can come true."

Dr. Dre was offered the key to Compton back on 2014.

The T.D.E. rapper wasn't the only MC to be honored with the key to their hometown. Ironically, Drake also received the key to Toronto yesterday (Feb. 12) during a ceremony at the NBA Celebrity All-Star game which is being held in the city. Both rappers now join the growing fraternity of MC's who have been honored by the place they grew up.

Now it's off to the Grammy Awards where Kendrick is up for an amazing 11 golden gramophones for categories including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album for To Pimp a Butterfly and Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Alright.”
