It is truly amazing how much a people had to go through and endure in order for others to benefit. The so-called father of modern gynecology, Dr. James Marion Sims, who experimented and operated on slaves without anesthesia now has a statue placed near Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street in New York. The placement of the statue is raising controversy because it is in a neighborhood that is mainly Black and Puerto Rican.

Around 1845 to 1849, Sims operated on 10 slave women; anesthesia did not become available until 1846, according to a New York Times article. Once his operating procedure was successful, he then began operating on white women. The white women were given anesthesia.
