Buffalo has been in the spotlight lately for the unusual amount of violence in the city. There has been more gun violence this year than in past years put together. I was thinking to myself as I was driving on the 33, is it just in our city? as I asked myself that question, I wondered if so, why is it more of a problem now, than it was in the past. Some people blamed it on the pandemic, others have blamed it on the lack of jobs and opportunity. I personally think that could play a small role if there weren't any jobs, but it seems like everybody's hiring for some kind of work.

So What Are The Other Cities Dealing With Gun Violence?

Let's start here, according to washingtonpost.com 2020 was the deadliest gun violence year in decades, 2021 so far, is worst than that. In the first five months of the year, 8100 people have died from gun violence in the United States, that's about 54 people dead a day. Cities including, Austin, Chicago, and Savannah GA are on the list of recent cities with a large number of crimes involving guns. Cites close to us like Cleveland as well.

Some experts have also attributed the uptick in violence to the poor relationship between police departments and people in the community, also the soaring rates of gun ownership. In my opinion, that makes more sense than some of the other reasons. If there are more guns on the streets, there easier to get a hold of.
