ABC News is reporting that a 14-year-old Chicago girl accused of killing another girl in a dispute over a boy tried unsuccessfully to fire a gun before someone fixed it for her and handed it back to her so she could open fire, prosecutors said Tuesday. The alleged shooter appeared at the hearing on a first-degree murder charge in Monday’s slaying of 14-year-old Endia Martin.

More from ABC News:

“Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters earlier in the day that the girls were fighting over a boy. According to prosecutors, the suspect went to a residence in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the city’s South Side around 4:30 Monday afternoon to continue a fight that began on Facebook.

A visibly upset McCarthy told reporters that the shooting illustrates a point he’s long made: It is far too easy to get a gun in Chicago. For more than a year, McCarthy has sought stiffer state penalties for gun crimes.

The 14-year-old suspect’s name has not been released because she is charged as a juvenile.

Does this response by a reader say it all in Chicago:

This is not news. This is normal behavior. Some facets of our society will never change. People like it like this. A second generation of young blacks is on its way down the toilet, because they like it like this. Such a waste of future astronauts, teachers, parents, doctors, nurses, garbage men, plumbers, entertainers, salespersons, scientists, firemen, lawyers, whatever they want to become. It MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.. All hope and opportunity gone, by their own hands. Rallies, signs, protests, change of religious beliefs, ministers, social activists, public persons, car washes, changes to gun laws, more police, more patrols, curfews, gang squads, undercover workers, informants, social clubs, organizations, teen clubs, teen motivation programs, counselors, advisors, outreach programs, public housing, govt. assistance, govt. intervention, more laws, less laws, changes to laws, more lighting, it MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. Street law rules: no snitching, no real desire to change; mad-dog, yell, shoot, not always in that order. Make a baby and walk away.Buy, sell, use illegal drugs. Stay out all night. Gather on a stoop, porch, or corner, hug, cry, yell, weep, it MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. Prison populations inordinately filled with one race of people out of all proportion to overall population statistics/demographics; politicians pontificating and pointing. It MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. If I was chief of police I would pull every last one of my officers out and form instead, a corral defense, not letting the nonsense spread elsewhere. By next Monday, 14 more fine young citizens will be dead in Chicago, because it MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.. It could, if the people involved really wanted to change. Clearly, they don’t. Sad. Tragic. Wasteful.
