More Names Mentioned As Possible Candidates For Mayor of Buffalo

The political season in Buffalo and Western New York is going strong. With the Presidential election set to happen this year, there is a lot of excitement and energy flowing all around the nation.

With the national elections being in the spotlight, you would think little attention would be paid to local elections around the region. However, that is not the case this year as one election that's not even scheduled for next year is getting a fair amount of attention.

Earlier this month, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown was offered a new job as the Western Regional Off-Track Betting President and CEO. This state agency is responsible for race betting in the Empire State. If he accepts, that position would mean the top job in New York State's second-largest city would be vacant for the first time in 20 decades. If that happens, Buffalo Common Council President Chris Scanlon will become interim mayor until the end of 2025, when a new mayor will be voted on in the November elections.

With that possibility, several names have been floating around about who would run to take over the job of running Buffalo.

Now, as we get closer to finding out what Mayor Brown is going to do, it appears that a few more people are interested in the job.

According to the Buffalo News, three more members of the Buffalo Common Council may consider running for mayor. Masten District Council Member Zeneta B. Everhart, Ellicott District Member and Council Majority Leader Leah Halton-Pope, and University District Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt has shown interest in the possibility of being mayor.

However, none has officially announced they're running or publically committed to seeking the office. While speaking to the Buffalo News, Council member, Everhart said that they're not saying yes, but also not saying no at this time

While we don't know who's running for mayor yet, we do know that next year will be an interesting year on the political front.
