It's been a rather rough winter already, and we're barely a month into the season. Over the last few days, Buffalo, Western New York, and large parts of the entire state of New York have been experiencing some severe weather conditions. Sub-freezing temperatures, below-zero wind chills, and several inches of lake effect snow have been wreaking havoc all over the state.

If that wasn't enough, several counties across the Empire State are under a State of Emergency because of the weather. Those declarations have also necessitated some communities to issue travel advisories and even close schools.

Needless to say, communities all over New York have their work cut out for them to dig out and clean up from the last blast of winter weather. However, that work is turning out to be harder for some communities in Western New York as some places are running out of road salt.

In a public message issued, the Town of Tonawanda is very low on road salt. So much so that they are cutting back on salting streets. Until further notice, the town is only going to salt its main streets, intersections, and stop signs. Secondary and side streets are not going to get any road treatment until the town is able to acquire more salt.

The cutbacks are due to the fact that the town did not get its latest salt delivery from its distributor. Tonawanda isn't the only locale that's having issues, according to Buffalo News reporter Ben Tsujimoto, other municipalities are running low on salt and even Erie County needed to borrow salt from the City of Buffalo.

If what we're going through is any indication of what's to come for the rest of the winter, we may have a long road ahead of us.
