By all accounts of the AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, sports fans in the 716 and all over most of the nation should be pretty satisfied with the result of the game. With the Buffalo Bills coming out on top 27-25, Josh Allen and New York State's only team are moving on to the AFC Championship to face the Kansas City Chiefs. Out of the last 5 years, this will be the fourth time these two teams will meet in the playoffs, which is turning into a classic rivalry between two powerhouse football teams.

Hope, of course, is high for Bills fans, who are mostly happy with the outcome of the game on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. However, there were several plays that rubbed both Bills fans and Ravens fans the wrong way due to one thing that receives consistent complaints from sports fans: the officiating.

There were quite a few plays where calls were made, or not made, by the refs that have drawn the ire of fans of both teams. But, there was one play in particular that went against Bills superstar Offensive Tackle Dion Dawkins that had fans of both teams throwing their hands up, screaming what was that?

Late in the first quarter, Dawkins used a swipe/trap block against Ravens Outside Linebacker David Ojabo, which took him to the ground. This blocking technique, which Dawkins has used all year and is perfectly legal according to current NFL rules, was ruled a hold by the officiating crew in the game. That penalty, which resulted in a 10-yard penalty against the Bills, effectively killed the drive they were on.

That penalty received almost universal agreement that it was a bad call by the refs. From sports analysts to the gameday play by play crew, most agree the refs got it wrong this time.

Bad calls, which have been a nearly universal complaint against the league this year, aren't really that common, according to stats released by the NFL. With more than 150 plays happening in every NFL Game, league officials claim that nearly 99% of calls made by the refs are accurate and that refs generally have a high level of vision, according to the National Institute of Health, but the general opinion that refs have bad vision continues.

To help combat that, one vision company in America has offered the refs free vision care.

LASIK, the laser eye surgery company, posted on their X (formerly known as Twitter) feed that they would provide free eye surgery for any NFL official after that terrible call against Dawkins. I wonder how many league officials will take them up on that offer.
