Photos From Buffalo’s Day of Reflection, Healing, and Hope
In the aftermath of the terrible tragedy that took the lives of 10 people, seriously injured 3 more, and left a community reeling, the Buffalo community gathered together to find ways to uplift each other and show the resiliency that Buffalo has.
As part of the 5/14 Remembrance Weekend, which was set to honor the fallen, the Community Gathering for Reflection, Healing, and Hope occurred on Saturday, May 13, 2023 just a few block from the Tops Markets on Jefferson, inside the Johnnie B Wiley Amateur Athletic Sports Pavilion.
Several hundred people gathered inside the old rockpile and they were joined by dozens of businesses and community groups, along with several different entertainers and musicians to find ways to fellowship and rebuild.
There were several activities that occurred during the Community Gathering, including the Buffalo Urban League's FIRST LEGO League, M&T Bank's Exploring Tech & Inspiring Hope Table, UBs Department of Computer Science & Engineering - all of whom where helping young people explore different STEM activities.
In addition to this, the Burchfield Penny Art Center and the AKG Buffalo Museum had different art activities for adults and young people to participate in.
Free food and other refreshments were provided to all by the African Heritage Food Co-op, Delaware North, Manna at Northland, Tops, Wegmans, and more.
The Main Stage featured speeches by people important to Buffalo, including Congressman Brian Higgins, Buffalo's Poet Laureate Jillian Hanesworth, and others. Along with music and spoken word from Karen Saxon & Will Holton, the African American Cultural Center Drumming and Dance Troupe, Drea D’Nur, Jada Spight, Latosha Jennings, Matthew Wilson, Moe Badger & Bethesda World Harvest Church Praise Team, and more.
