After an extremely mild and enjoyable autumn in the Empire State, the thing that happens every year but still upsets us has finally happened. And, of course, when the Lake Effect snow machine gets to work in New York State, it gets to work.

The first lake-effect storm of the year dropped multiple feet of snow on different areas of the state, causing a state of emergency and the closure of the New York State Thruway. Not to be outdone, the second storm of the year, which happened just a few days after the first one, closed schools all over the region. Given that snow happens, we need to be prepared for the winter, not just in our houses but also in our cars.

Driving Around With Bald Tires This Winter Can Be Dangerous

As you know, winter in the Empire State can last a long time, especially in Western and Central New York. To be ready for it, There are plenty of things you can do to prepare, along with things you should keep your car prepared for in case you get stuck in the snow.

But before you do any of that, you should probably have some decent tires to handle the winter weather.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, for your tires to be considered legal for the road, they have to meet the following requirements:

  • Tread depth— must be at least 2/32 inch when measured in two adjacent major tread grooves showing the most wear
  • Tire condition— check for any fabric break or cut over the length or width of 1 inch, visible bumps, bulges or knots, and any restricted use designation on the tire
  • Tire pressure—if the vehicle's tire pressure is not within the manufacturer's recommendation, you will be informed. This is an advisement only and not cause for rejection.

We all know people who drive around all winter with bald tires; we watch them slip and slide all over the roads, and because of the condition of those wheels, we also watch them end up on the side of the road.

You can be safe this winter with all the great tire shops around the region. So, don't go sliding around Western New York; get the right tires you need today.
