Wild weather during the winter season is something that is not a strange occurrence in the Empire State. From just about Halloween to Easter, the people in New York State typically have to deal with all sorts of weather, from serious rainstorms to massive snowstorms and everything in between. People in the northeast are essentially experts about what to do when the weather hits.

That is exactly thing is what's coming to New York State and other areas near the Great Lakes over the next few days as some serious winter weather is expected to hit places like Buffalo and Western New York starting early in the morning on Monday, December 29, 2025.

Officials in New York's second largest city announced that they are closing one of the major throughourfares into the city first thing in the morning due to the potential of very high winds to hit the region, and now officials from the New York State Thruway Authority are following suit with the state's major interstate.

With wind gusts expecting to peek at 70 mph or higher, starting at 6 am on December 29th, empty tractor trailers and tandem trailers are banned from the I-190, I-90 in both directions from Exit 46 to the PA Line, I-290, I-990, New York State Route 400, US Route 219 from the I-90 to New York State Route 39, and I-86 from the PA line to I-390.

Winter storms are approaching several regions of New York State bringing ice, snow and high winds that will make roadways hazardous... New Yorkers should monitor local forecasts and take caution to avoid travel in impacted areas. Plow crews, emergency management teams and utility personnel have been deployed and are ready to keep New Yorkers safe throughout the storm.
-Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York State

The state has had some wild weather over the last few days. It was so bad in some areas that Governor Hochul declared a State of Emergency in several counties across the Empire State on the day after Christmas, with conditions not having improved much in some areas.

Things are expected to get particularly bad as the day goes on, so we're urging caution as you navigate on Monday.
