New York State Making New ID Available
The status of photo identification in the country has been in the news a whole lot lately. As we inch closer to the federal deadline for states and citizens to adopt and begin using REAL IDs, there has been a rush to get things up to snuff. It's not just a New York thing but a national thing.
Another thing that has been closing coming to is the concept of having a mobile ID.
What Is a Mobile ID?
According to IDEMIA North America, a Mobile ID is an approved digital copy of your government-issued photo identification. As using mobile devices becomes more ingrained in our daily lives, having the ability to provide positive proof of your identity seems like a natural step in our technological evolution.
Several states around the nation, like Arizona, Delaware, Mississippi, and more, have begun issuing mobile IDs, and now it seems that the Empire State is joining the fray.
You can now download an app on your smartphone that will give you access to an approved digital copy of your New York State identification or Drivers License.
In order to download your NYS Mobile ID, you need to do the following:
- Download the MID App from your device app store,
- Sign up and register your phone,
- Snap a photo of your ID or Drivers License Card,
- Snap a selfie so officials can verify its you,
- Wait for approval
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles does advise that this does not replace your physical Driver's License or ID Card but serves as an additional option.
This seems like a pretty convenient way to keep your ID nearby, especially if you're glued to your device like a lot of folks are today.
