New York State Giving Away Air Conditioners
The summer of 2022 will feature so many great events that we are looking forward to. But when you are not outside enjoying these fun things, you might be wishing your apartment or house was cool enough to stay comfortable in. Thanks to New York State, there is good news for those who qualify.
Officials have announced 15-million dollars in cooling assistance through the state to help low-income residents who don't have air-conditioning units.
The program covers the cost of an AC unit and installation for all New Yorkers who qualify and applications are already being accepted.
The weather this spring has been a roller coaster of sorts. Many have had their heat on one day and then air conditioning the next. The snow was flying as recently as last week! But we all know that those long, hot summer days will be coming and there is nothing more frustrating than trying to sleep when the house is crazy hot! The other issue for some is health related. Breathing issues become a bigger challenge in the hot weather but to add to that is the humid conditions much of New York gets in the summer. An air conditioner is certainly a benefit to anyone who has young kids as well.
To qualify for cooling assistance under the amended guidelines, applicants must meet HEAP eligibility criteria and income thresholds, which vary by household size. For instance, a family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,249 or an annual gross income of $62,983. Prior to this year, the cooling component of HEAP was only available to income-eligible households with an individual suffering from a documented medical condition exacerbated by extreme heat.
