Governor Hochul To Sign New York Gun Reform Bills Into Law
Gun laws appear to be changing in New York state.
After the tragedy of May 14 at a Buffalo grocery store, the push for gun reform was stronger than ever in Western New York, led by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Governor Kathy Hochul shared a tweet over the weekend after news came out that 4 people died and 28 were injured in a series of mass shootings over the weekend in the United States.
“We’re taking steps in New York State to prevent gun violence, but we need comprehensive national action to stop these shootings and keep our communities safe,” Governor Hochul tweeted.
According to ABC7, Governor Kathy Hochul will sign gun reform bills that were passed by Democratic lawmakers last week.
These gun reform bills will allegedly ban “anyone under age 21 from buying or possessing a semi-automatic rifle.”
That’s not the only change we are expected to see, though. ABC7 detailed all of the changes with these new gun reform laws, including the criminalization of threats of attacks, the banned sale of body armor, and new requirements for the purchase of assault rifles, in addition to the previously stated minimum age being raised to 21.
Once passed, New York will join a small group of states that have already implemented similar changes, including Florida, Illinois, and Washington, just to name a few.
Governor Kathy Hochul is in the Bronx today to make the official announcement at 10:00 am, according to the official schedule. We'll have more updates then.
