When Will Perseids Meteor Shower Be Above Western New York?
This week, if Mother Nature cooperates, we should get quite the meteor show here in Western New York. Here is what you need to know.
Perseids Meteor Shower Will Be Above Western New York This Week
Tonight and into tomorrow morning will be peak viewing for the Perseids Meteor Shower here in Western New York. At its peak, the Perseids Meteor Shower should have anywhere between 90 and 100 meteors visible to the naked eye every hour.
Peak viewing will be around 11 pm tonight through 3 am on Thursday. With the New Moon this week, if the skies remain clear, it should be a great time to see fireballs streak across the sky. The meteors are debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.
Here Are Tips For Best Viewing Experience
- Location: Go outside and away from bright city lights. The darker the area around you, the better. It will help you see the streaking meteors.
- Equipment: None needed. Meteors will be visible to the naked eye. For this meteor shower, you should skip telescopes or binoculars. They narrow your field of vision; using your naked eyes gives you a wide field of view.
- Eye Adjustment: Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark, and avoid looking at bright phone screens. While you might want to record using your phone, turn off the flash. Any bright light can narrow the amount of vision you have looking for meteors.
- Direction: Look upward toward general open areas of the sky; meteors can appear anywhere.
