Steel Company Plans Expansion in Buffalo, New York

A growth in business is sparking an expansion plan by a fourth-generation-owned Buffalo manufacturer.

Great Lakes Pressed Steel Corp. is planning a 10,400-square-foot new building on its Niagara Street campus on Buffalo’s west side. The new building, according to documents filed with the Buffalo Planning Board, is set for 1382 Niagara St. The planning board will begin its review of the project on May 6.

Designed by Carmina Wood Design’s Joseph Palumbo, the building will house mostly light manufacturing operations, said Tim Nichols, the fourth-generation president of the privately-held Great Lakes Pressed Steel.

“We need the space,” Nichols said.

Pending various Buffalo approvals, construction on the $1 million expansion project will start later this year.

Nichols said he expects to add a few new employees to handle the increased work load. Great Lakes Pressed Steel has 20 employees.

With roots dating back roughly 1909, Great Lakes Pressed Steel produces metal stampings used for a wide range of industrial clients.

The project is the latest in a series of new development projects that has taken hold along the Niagara Street spine in Buffalo stretching from Buffalo City Hall north into the Black Rock neighborhood.
