In a bit of a shocking move, the New England Patriots have announced that they will be releasing Diggs before free agency.

It's pretty common for teams to inform players if they intend to release them these days. Today, it happened with one of the most well-known veterans in the NFL. According to Tom Peilissero, the Patriots are releasing Diggs after just one year with the team.

It's not for lack of production

While the Patriots are moving on from the receiver, it's not for lack of production. Last season he eclipsed the 1000 yard mark in receiving yards again. It's a stat that he's been able to claim for 7 of his last 8 seasons. The only year he wasn't able to get there was his one year in Houston after tearing his ACL in 2024.

Did Diggs get released for off-field issues?

The Patriots did not indicate why they are releasing him. While Diggs has been able to produce on the field, some might guess that it's the off-field issues that may have cost him his roster spot. Diggs is facing felony charges of strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery following an alleged Dec. 2, 2025, altercation with his personal chef. She says he smacked her across the face and choked her with the crook of his arm, leaving her short of breath.

Will The Bills try to get Diggs back?

It's not unheard of for Buffalo Bills players to come back to this team under the last coaching staff. It will be interesting to see what happens with Joe Brady. Will character issues be something that will keep him from going after players as it seemed to be with McDermott? Or will they do anything to help get Josh Allen and this team over the hump?
