There's a saying in the entertainment business that has been used a lot all over the Empire State: the show must go on. That statement is especially fitting after the region was pummeled with below-zero wind chills and snow that you could measure with a yardstick.

Now, as we approach mid-week, several school districts around the region are saying that schools need to reopen and kids need to get back into the classroom.

That exact thing is happening for New York State's second-largest school district, as they just confirmed that class will be in session on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, but with a little twist for older students in Buffalo.

Buffalo School Buildings Reopen For Some Students, Others Still Remote

The week of Monday, January 19, 2026, through Friday, January 23, 2026, was Regents Exam week for high school students in New York State; but thanks to some extreme winter weather that hit Buffalo that same week, city schools had to cancel classes in an effort to keep kids safe, sound, and warm. However, that closure forced the district to make some changes to the Regents exam schedule, which then further delayed when exams could be scored and transmitted to the State Education Department for the official records.

To help everyone catch up after a few days of having to deal with winter weather, Buffalo Public High School students have another day of Remote Learning on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

According to updates from the Buffalo Public Schools, while High School students have a remote learning day to allow secondary school staff to score Regents Exams, PreK-8 students in primary and middle school should report to school for regular classes. The same applies to all district staff.

The region is still dealing with extremely low temperatures and lots of snow, but as local schools begin to run low on snow days, it many are making the tough choice to bring kids back in.
