Whether you like it or not, there are a couple of things that you are sure to have to deal with when living in the Empire State. While these things are generally true across the state, it's especially true if you live north of Rockland and Westchester counties.

Living in Western or Central New York, the Southern Tier, the Capital Region, or the north country, you are going to always have to suffer with New York State Taxes and snow. While the Empire State had its first official snowfall a few weeks ago, the Buffalo region got its first blast of the white stuff on Sunday, November 9, 2025, when a small lake effect band blew in off of Lake Erie and blanketed the region with some snow.

Now that we've finally seen some of the white stuff on the ground, this marks the unofficial/official start of winter in the 716. While Buffalo got its snow on Sunday, Rochester is expecting its first snowfall on Monday, November 10th, according to the National Weather Service.

Reports from the National Weather Service have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for southern Erie County and Cattaraugus County, while there is a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect for Chautauqua County and northwest Pennsylvania.

Generally light snow today will give way to developing areas of lake effect snow southeast of the lakes tonight, which will then shift to areas east of the lakes and weaken during Tuesday. In the advisory and warning areas, most of the snowfall shown in the graphic above will fall between tonight and Tuesday morning.

  • Lockport - 2.3 inches
  • Wellsville - 2.0 inches
  • Batavia - 2.0 inches
  • Kenmore - 1.7 inches
  • Cheektowaga - 1.5 inches
  • Dunkirk - 1.5 inches
  • Fredonia - 1.3 inches
  • Buffalo's NWS Office - 1.2 inches

More snow is on the way, so if you haven't started to prepare for winter, now is the time to start getting ready.
