Over the last few weeks, I’ve heard so many people talk about how fed up they are with the presidential elections and how they’re just going to skip voting because the he candidates are just so terrible.

On one hand you have Clinton, who is generally perceived as inauthentic and deceptive. Specifically, some have said that Clinton is a criminal who belongs in jail.

On the other hand you have Trump, who has the highest unfavorable rating ever for a presidential candidate, who is generally disliked by everyone - even prominent members of his own political party.

Trust me I get it, I don’t plan on voting for either of these folks. I am a political junkie and I am disgust. I know for a fact that my presidential vote this year will be going to a 3rd party candidate.

Whatever you do, don’t let your distaste for either candidate dissuade you from voting this year. Our government has many moving pieces, most of whom are only marginally affected by who the President is.

Now, what do I mean?

Even though our all of candidates suck (IMO), have you ever heard of the Supreme Court of the United States? Well the president is the only person who can nominate someone to serve on the court. Do you disagree with any recent Supreme Court decisions? Well, whoever becomes the next president will have a huge hand in shaping the court for the foreseeable future.

In addition to voting for President, we have 88% of the Congress is up for re-election this year. The entire House of Representatives and ⅓ (34) Members of the Senate are on the ballot to be reelected.

Remember, all Federal laws are debated and enacted through Congress. So if you hate the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and wonder how the hell did this become law or if you think your Federal taxes are too high, then you need to vote this year because Congress controls the purse strings.

Speaking of the Supreme Court, did you know there is a New York State Supreme Court too? All judges in New York are elected. Have you, or anyone you know, been treated unfairly by a judge in our great state? Guess how they got there? Maybe you should vote them out?

Speaking of unfair treatment in court, did you know that every District Attorney in New York State is also elected? Have you ever felt railroaded by a local DA? Well guess what you can do?

Are there any New York State laws that really get under your skin? There are 150+63 members of the New York State Legislative branch (NYS Senate and Assembly) and all of them up to be elected this year. Guess who which branch of local government is responsible for writing those laws?

Do you get my point so far? So, while I agree that the Presidential candidates suck, your vote matters. There are levels to this and lots of politicians bank on you not caring enough to vote - that is how things seem to happen without input of the people...and don't get me started on why you should vote for Mayors, City Councils, School Boards and etc...

Only around 25% of those who could vote in Erie Co. actually voted in the last general election.

Your vote does matter!

The 2016 General Election is Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

If you don't know where your polling place is, this link can help you find it.

So, don't be passive and just let things happen. Go vote. You just sittin on the couch reading this blog, you might as well go vote lol. If someone needs a ride, give them one. Tell ya momma-n-nem, and ya cousin pookie, to go vote.
