While the New York State Legislature is moving to ban the use of Natural Gas and Propane to cook food and/or heat your home, that ban is still a few years away. However, before that ban takes effect, officials are implementing new taxes and fees to make the use of those products even more expensive than they already are in New York State.

Part of the New York State Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act that was signed into law in 2019 allows the State to begin to apply a Carbon Tax for the use of Fossil Fuels.

New York already ranks near the top of states with the highest energy costs in the nation Most people experience those high prices all the time when going to the gas pump and when they open their gas bills. As we get closer to the date when the ban on gas and propane appliances, it's likely these prices will continue to rise.

The New York Propane Gas Association estimates that the average New York family will pay nearly $22,000 in additional new taxes and fees over 10 years once these new costs are implemented by New York State.

While New York is a rich state, many of the residents are low and middle income, and will likely struggle to pay such a large increase if the fuel price figures that are estimated by the NYPGA are accurate.

Officials from New York are accepting comments from the public about the changes that are proposed by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, the Gas Transition & Affordable Energy Act, and the All-Electric Buildings Act.
