Lil Wayne has ruffled a few feathers in New York with his comments about the Big Apple. In an interview with MTV’s RapFix, when the rapper was asked about his thoughts of the city, he matter-of-factly said, “Flat out: I don’t like New York.”

Now it’s important that we frame Wayne’s comments in its proper context. Between his eight-month prison stint at Rikers Island and the Hot 97 Summer Jam fiasco with Nicki Minaj, Wayne’s relationship with New York has been strained. But last week, Weezy had a great time rocking the mic at Minaj’s free concert at the Roseland Ballroom in the Empire State.

“As far as last week['s show], last week was awesome,” he tells RapFix. “I think everything happens for a reason, and I think when people say that, you’re not supposed to leave it at, ‘Everything happens for a reason.’ I believe everything happens for a reason and then you make the most of that reason. I think we made the most of it last week.”

Still, there are some New York officials who didn’t like Wayne’s remark about their beloved city. According to Complex, New York State Senator Malcolm Smith, members of the hip-hop youth council, and tourism officials are demanding that Weezy apologize for his comments.

“New York City is the birthplace of the Hip Hop music movement. Millions of New Yorkers listen to his music every day,” read the press release. “His comments is [sic] outraged his local fans and residents. The group today will be demanding an apology of the hip-hop star. Lil Wayne has had misfortune in New York with recent gun charges and a jail sentence.”

Senator Smith held a press conference today (Aug. 22) at 3PM ET, in New York’s Times Square, to further throw vitriol at Lil Wayne.
