The Zika Virus has reached Upstate New York very close to home. Actually, it has shown up at home in Erie County!

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein confirmed Sunday the first case of the Zika virus in Erie County.

According to reports, a person was diagnosed with a Zika infection on Wednesday and has been treated and recovered from the illness. The person infected had traveled to El Salvador within the past four weeks.

There is some good news, however. Although, there is a diagnosed case of Zoka Virus in Erie County, the mosquitoes that carry the virus are NOT present in Erie County at this time.

There are over one million cases in Brazil and over 50 confirmed cases in the U.S., but there are no mosquitoes in the U.S. that carry the Zika Virus.
