The day that parents have looked forward to since the end of June has finally arrived in the 716 as thousands of kids have returned to the classroom for the 2023-24 school year.

While parents are rejoicing, we're sure a majority of those students aren't exactly excited to go back to school yet, and who can blame them; after weeks-on-end of unadulterated fun, reality has really started to set it.

Now in Western New York, not every student goes back to school at the same time. Public schools in each district are able to set the start date of classes in each municipality, along with the areas Private and Parochial Schools.

For example, my son, who attends Nichols School in North Buffalo, started classes on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Schools in Amherst, Cheektowaga, and Tonawanda started on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, while Buffalo started on Friday, September 8th.

No matter what date your little ones start on, there is one thing that most parents can't help but do before they venture out into the world to begin another year of learning:

Taking pictures on the first day of school.

If your kids are anything like mine, then you know how much they hate when you force them to pose for a pre-class selfie. Especially if they have to hold one of those silly signs, as my son calls it. But only if they knew how much it means to us parents to have photo documentation of our kids at the start of every year.

I look back at old first-day photos of my sons and you can find me smiling from ear to ear with adoration and affection. I'm sure you feel the same way, which is why we want to highlight your kids on their first day of school.

We asked you to share photos of your little ones going back to school with us on Facebook and you did not disappoint.

You can check out your photos below in our 2023-24 back-to-school photo gallery.

Some Surprises On the List of the 12 Biggest School Districts in Upstate New York!

Most people in Upstate New York graduated from very small school districts. I know I did, 308 students. But what about those in the larger cities?

Here is a list of the dozen largest school districts in Upstate New York. For those of us from small rural schools, it is mind-boggling to imagine graduating from a school with 10,000, 20,000 and even 40,000 students in the district like some of those on this list did.

Amazing!
