Kendrick Lamar and rock group Imagine Dragons brought a raw, high-energy and pyrotechnic-filled performance to the Grammy Awards stage Sunday night (Jan. 26). The two acts blended genres effortlessly, while donning all-white for their mash-up of the Compton MC's ‘m.A.A.d City' and Dragons' ‘Radioactive.’
The year was 1993. Hip-hop, only about 20 years old, was dipped in gold. It had reached around the world, a long journey from its origins as a culture created by the improvising youth of New York City. On Nov. 9, A Tribe Called Quest -- Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (by this point original member Jarobi had become the "sometimes 'Y'") -- delivered their third studio album, 'Midnight Marauders,’ a defining moment in rap's Golden Era.
Peter Gunz continues to hide his wife Amina from the world. But she isn't going to be kept a secret for long and tells Rich Dollaz about their nuptials. An outraged Peter finds out and her plan backfires. “Don’t tell nobody we’re married,” he demands. Aren't side chicks a secret, not wives? These seem to be new rules he's following.
This year, MTV brought the Video Music Awards to Brooklyn's Barclays Center to give out Moonmen for the best visuals in music over the last year. Of course some of hip-hop and R&B's biggest names showed up to the event making a statement on the red carpet.
Earlier this year, the Robert Glasper Experiment received a Grammy for Best R&B Album for 'Black Radio' -- a genre-bending twist of soul, jazz and hip-hop featuring some of the most talented vocalists and rhymers in the game.
Glasper will bring back that magical fusion on the sequel, 'Black Radio 2,' which will officially be released through Blue Note Records on Oct. 29, according to the New York Times.
Veteran hip-hop producer Just Blaze is back in the studio, but this time it's not for your favorite rapper's album. The jack-of-all-trades worked on sounds for the classic action cartoon-turned-video game 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.'
