I love this stuff. Thanks to our friends at the Buffalo History Museum for giving us this picture!

The American Hotel, on the west side of Main Street between Court and Eagle streets, was destroyed by fire on March 10, 1850. It was one of 99 buildings constructed by Benjamin Rathbun from 1835 to 1836, five stories tall, built of cut brown stones and surmounted by a cupola.

This daguerreotype of the American hotel ruins, snapped by Donald McDonnell the morning after the fire is the earliest known photograph ever taken of Buffalo

Now, the Main Street Mall occupies that area.

Make sure you go check out the Buffalo History Museum for more stuff like this, at One Museum Court in Buffalo! Tickets are $7 for an adult, $5 for seniors and students and $2.50 for kids!
