Western New York's only level one adult trauma center is getting some help in the battle against COVID-19 from the United States Military.

In a press release from ECMC, officials said that twenty members of the United States Navy will be headed to Buffalo to help provide aid in the battle of COVID-19 in Western New York.

Erie County currently has a COVID-19 positive rate of over 25% and New York State Governor Kathy Hochel along with FEMA made the request for military assistance. The call for military help is part of Governor Hochel's 'Winter Surge Plan 2.0" to battle the spread of COVID-19 in New York State.

The military medical personnel coming to Western New York includes nurses, respiratory therapists, and medical doctors.

The US government is sending another medical team to help hospitals in New Hampshire as well as in Western New York.

The members of the military will be working in support of the nurses, doctors, and other health care workers already working at ECMC.

The military personal are expected to be in Western New York starting this Tuesday, January 11th, and will be here for at least 30 days.

ECMC President and CEO Thomas J. Quatroche Jr. Ph.D. said the hospital is happy to have the help.

We will welcome warmly the members of the medium medical team into our ECMC family, and look forward to their collaboration and participation as we continue to fight against the COVID-19 virus and maintain our high-quality care for the residents of Western New York.”
