There are dozens and dozens of famous homes in Upstate New York that are open to the public for tours.  They cover a wide swath of American history and shine the light on famous writers, politicians, folk legends, and New York State icons.  All are open to the public for tours.

The homes on this list can be found from the Hudson Valley through the Catskills and Adirondacks and out to Western New York.  Docents will narrate the house's life (and that of its famous occupants) as you get up close and personal while you walk down the footpaths of history.  These homes range from splendid mansions, to farmhouses, to rustic homemade dwellings. Each tells a vivid story of a chapter of New York and American history.

Some of the stories of these places are already famous, others you may be hearing about for the first time.  History lovers...these are all bucket list worthy!

And, if you know of a famous home that you feel our readers would like to learn about and maybe visit for a tour, please give it a shout out over on our Facebook page!

(Note: There are three galleries for you to roll through.  So keep reading!  Each entry has a direct link to the homes' website so you can get directions and take a look at tour hours.)

Here is an eclectic collection of 21 homes that have wonderful back stories to them. Several are grand mansions, several are museums, one is basically a cabin, and one is attached to a lighthouse. The homes have fantastic DNA to them. You may be surprised that a couple of these homes have very significant connections to famous authors. One is the home of a medical family who practiced there for 80 years (same family!). Take a look at these "unknown homes of Upstate New York." And the best thing is that...they are all open to the public for tours! I wrote a book about the famous homes of Upstate New York titled "Open House" (Syracuse University Press) and these are some of the best ones from that book!
