After three correctional facilities went on strike in Western New York, nearly two dozen have reportedly joined in.

There are 44 prisons in New York State, and it looks like the majority of them are now on strike. This all began at a medium-level security prison called Collins Correctional Facility, which is located in the town of Collins, NY, just south of Buffalo. Joining them early today were Elmira and Groveland correctional facilities, but now several across this state have joined in. The reason for the strike began with an I incident at the Collins prison last week.

Lockdown at Collins Correctional Facility

Last Wednesday, February 12, there was a lockdown at Collins Correctional Facility after several inmates caused an incident with officers. Illegal contraband, which included cell phones, was used, causing the entire prison to be locked down. The D Block, in particular, was a big focus. Inmates were said to have barricaded themselves. Several officers were injured. This lead to the strikes happening now across the state.

Prison Guard Strikes Happening Now Across New York State

A union representative says the strike has nothing to do with money and all to do with safety. Officers want mandatory body scans for all visitors, as well as all incoming mail. They are asking for a $5,000 bonus for new employees and changes to overtime mandates as well. Clearly, this is a big issue for all corrections officers across the state.

The strike is technically illegal, as state workers are not allowed to strike or they could face serious fines.
