The 9 Dumbest Laws That Really Exist in New York State
You won't believe it, but these are actual laws on the books in the Empire State. And you have probably broken them.
Every state has laws on the books that make a lot of sense. From crime to traffic, to codes and permits, each state has its own take on laws and regulations. It's all in an effort to try and make things work best, efficiently, or in some cases to simply make the state some money. For example, "sin taxes" on things like cigarettes generate a lot of revenue for a state like New York and others.

People will debate any and every law for their effectiveness or intent, but sometimes, there are laws on the books that everyone would agree are dumb. Or, at least, they are odd to have. Many of these laws were created long ago in response to a perceived problem that almost always doesn't still exist. If it still exists, then it's something that rarely, if never, happens. In fact, these kinds of rules often are not enforced and go ignored if broken. These are often referred to as "Dead Letter Laws" or unenforced laws.
New York has plenty of Dead Letter Laws for various reasons, but these laws, which are rarely, if ever, enforced, are not just dated and weird; they are straight-up dumb.
Of all places, Forest Grove Elementary, a California School, shared a document online that reveals the dumbest laws in each state. For example, in California, did you know it's illegal to ride a bicycle in a pool, specifically at Baldwin Park? Or how, in Ohio, it's illegal to kill a housefly without a license if it's within 160 feet of a church? Yes, these are real laws. Are they enforced? No. Or, at least, they almost never are.
