This fall women who attend certain colleges in New York State will have a chance to participate in a new Varsity Sport.

5 colleges in New York State announced they will debut women's Flag Football as a varsity sport.

Those colleges include SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Hartwick College, Elmira College, and Russell Sage College.

Each one of those colleges will put together a women's flag football team and compete against each other on the Varsity level as part of the Empire 8 conference.

Many of these colleges offer women's flag football as a club team. According to their press release, SUNY Brockport has 42 active players for their club team that practices 3 times a week and plays other club teams around the region.

Women's flag football has become a very popular sport in New York and has even received attention and monetary donations from the NFL's Buffalo Bills.

The Bills along with the Ralph C Wilson Foundation have earmarked $260,000 dollars to help promote flag football at middle schools across Western New York.


In New York State, there are expected to be over 30 high schools that will offer women's flag football as a varsity sport. There are also over 200 high school club teams that are expected to play games across the state this year.

SUNY Brockport will be holding a special meeting for current students and prospective students about the new team on Thursday night at 7 pm on campus at the Tuttle Athletic Complex. You can get more information HERE.
