Severe weather on Sunday led to an incredible video from Lake Erie in Dunkirk, New York.

Fast-moving storms were reported in parts of Western New York, with rain and thunderstorms that led to a severe thunderstorm warning being issued by the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Those storms also led to the formation of a massive water spout to develop on Lake Erie near Dunkirk, New York. Check out this video that was captured by someone on land during the storms on Sunday.

What Are Water Spouts?

Water spouts are like tornadoes that form over water. They are caused when a rotating column of air forms over a body of water, often extending from a cloud to the water's surface. While not major weather threats, water spouts can be very dangerous for boats on the water or if they make their way onto land.

If water spouts make their way onto land, they are considered tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service, there are two types of water spouts that can form.

Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts.

Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning.

The good news is that it looks like there was no damage reported from this water spout.
