If you own a dog in New York State brace yourself for some bad news.

According to new data in a study commissioned by johnfitch.com, New York State is the third worst state for dog owners in the entire county.

The rankings were based on an index of 100 and were tabulated using these parameters:

Veterinarian employment per 1,000 jobs

Average base dog walking price per hour,

Animal protection laws,

Percentage of the population in each state that is a dog owner.

Overall based on that criteria, New York only scored a rating of 26.35 which was the third lowest in the entire country.

New York only beat out Alabama and Utah with Utah being named the worst state for dog owners.

New York got low marks in Dog ownership and number of vets per 1,000 jobs. New York was in the middle for Animal protection laws and was near the top for the cost of dog walkers.

On the flip side, Oregon, Montana, and Vermont were named the best states for dog owners. Each had a score of over 58 out of 100 with Oregon being the best state for dog owners.

Oregon had a high number of vets per 1000 jobs and had the best animal protection laws in the country.
