Everyone is talking about the black bear that was spotted this week in Amherst, NY, and it has caused concern and intrigue.

I mean, what are you supposed to do when you see a black bear running through your neighborhood?

Take a look at the video below, shared by the Amherst Police Department via News 4.

Black bears are the most common bear in North America, and they are found in about 80% of the United States. Western New York has had its share of black bears in the area, yet every time we see one, it can be a little jarring.

While most people will keep to themselves and stay in their house to not disturb the bear, you should always be ready to attack the bear if needed.

That might sound crazy: attacking a bear? Nobody would want to do it, but you might need to.

According to the U.S. National Park Service, “If a black bear charges and attacks you, FIGHT BACK WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE!”

When it comes to black bears, you don’t want to use the strategy of playing dead. Black bears are generally shy and avoid human contact, so in the event of a black bear attack, the key is to assert dominance so that they drop their advance.

Direct punches and kicks to the black bear’s face can help to stop an attack, but it is only encouraged in the event that a black bear attacks you.

Since black bears are relatively common and have been spotted around Western New York, it is important to know how to best defend yourself.

If a grizzly/brown bear charges at you, it’s better to play dead.
