What Would Have Happened If The Bills Went Into Overtime?
Sigh.
It’s not necessary to rehash the Buffalo Bills’ brutal loss on Sunday afternoon– we know that you know.
We’ll let JJ Watt say it for us.
But even if the Bills did everything right in those last few minutes of the 4th quarter and forced their bout with the Texans into overtime, would they have walked away with the win?
We hate to break it to you, but history says “no.”
Sean McDermott Has A Terrible Overtime Record With The Bills
Even if Ka’imi Fairbarin didn’t make that 59-yard field goal to clinch the game for the Texans, we’re not positive Buffalo could have pulled out a win if the matchup went into overtime.
Since becoming head coach in 2017, Sean McDermott has a dismal record when it comes to winning games that go into overtime, with a record of 1-6. It’s tied for the worst head coach overtime record in history.
The Bills haven’t pulled off a victory after going into overtime since 2017, when they beat the Indianapolis Colts in week fourteen 13-7.
After that, history speaks for itself:

Saturday, January 4, 2020: LOSS @ Houston texans 22-19
December 12, 2021: LOSS @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33-27
January 23, 2022: LOSS @ Kansas City Chiefs 42-36 (the infamous “13 seconds” game)
November 13, 2022: LOSS vs. Minnesota Vikings 33-30
September 11, 2023: LOSS @ New York Jets 22-16
November 26, 2023: LOSS @ Philadelphia Eagles 37-34
