The closing of several local Bed, Bath & Beyond stores has sent many Western New Yorkers into a shopping frenzy, using up their leftover coupons in the weeks after the announcement and scouring shelves for deals as the chain begins to liquidate their merchandise.

But the bankruptcy filing of Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. doesn’t just affect the shoppers and employees of those stores.

Christmas Tree Shops is a favorite place for shoppers looking for great deals on home decor, kitchen supplies, snacks, and personal items. Even though the store has plenty of holiday-themed stuff seasonally, the name comes from the idea that they want customers to feel like it’s “Christmas every day” while shopping there.

When the chain was acquired by Bed, Bath, & Beyond Inc. in 2003, Christmas Tree Shops expanded rapidly across the east and Midwest.

Now that their parent company is closing across the country, what will happen to our local store?

Christmas Tree Shops Files For Bankruptcy

Unfortunately, the financial issues for Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. don’t stop at just those stores. Christmas Tree Shops have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as well. The announcement came merely a year after they announced they would be rebranding their stores as CTS (to the dismay of many).

As a result, the bargain chain will close ten locations throughout the country as part of a restructuring plan.

In a statement, representatives of the chain said many employees of the closing stores will be offered jobs at other branches, and that no other layoffs are being considered.

Will Christmas Tree Shops In Amherst Close?

It’s hard to say exactly what will happen to the Christmas Tree Shops store at The Boulevard down the line (just look at what happened to Bed, Bath & Beyond).

But for now, CTS listed only two New York State locations in their memo - Watertown, and Spring Valley, so the Amherst store should stay open for the time being (fingers crossed!).

Here’s the current list of cities where Christmas Tree Shops are shutting their doors:

  • Watertown, NY
  • Spring Valley, NY
  • Falmouth, MA
  • Sagamore, MA
  • Downington, PA
  • Lancaster, PA
  • Potomac Mills, VA
  • Flint, MI
  • Kennesaw, GA
  • Pembroke Pines, FL

Frequent shoppers of the ten stores listed should get there fast, as those locations have already begun to liquidate their merchandise and should be completely closed sometime in July.

Don’t let those unused CTS gift cards go to waste!
