Unique “Black Moon” This Weekend In New York State
This Friday night, you will be able to see something high in the sky you haven't seen in nearly three years.
A rare "Black Moon" will be high in the sky above New York State.
What is a "Black Moon"?
According to livescience.com, there are two types of "Black Moons" that can happen.
The first kind of "Black Moon" is called a monthly Black Moon. This happens when there is a new moon near the beginning of the month and then another new moon in the same month. That second new moon is called a Black Moon, and this happens once every 29 months.
The other kind of "Black Moon", the one we will have this weekend, is called a seasonal black moon. This Black Moon is the third new moon in a season of four new moons. This weekend will be the third new moon of summer 2025, so it will be called a Black Moon. This type of Black Moon happens every 33 months.
Will You Be Able To See The Black Moon In New York?
The simple answer is no. When a new moon happens, it means the side of the moon that is reflecting the sunlight is facing away from Earth. While the moon is still there, we just don't see it since there is no light reflecting back to Earth.
So you won't be able to see the "Black Moon" this weekend, but just know it is happening Friday night into Saturday morning.
The good news is that if the sky remains clear, you should have a better chance of seeing stars and the Milky Way since there will be no moonlight.
Check out some amazing photos of the Moon.
