Remember the '80s? Boy, do we ever! There were gold chains and track suits, boomboxes and shelltops, freestyling at the clubs and rhyming on the streets. The memories are vast and the culture was hot.

Now, 30-plus years later, rap stars are reinventing the genre with each beat, each lyric, each brush with the law and every fight against it. But the roots of rap music do, in fact, stay with them for the long haul. Sometimes in ways never thought possible.
