Wiz Khalifa Isn’t Feeling Kanye West’s ‘Waves’ Album Title, Praises Max B

On Tuesday evening (Jan. 26), Kanye West had a change of heart and decided to rename his album, scrapping Swish for the more costal Waves. While the album now shares a title with one of its songs, and the change is considered to be an improvement, Wiz Khalifa found the switch-up mildly offensive. In a string of tweets published shortly after Kanye's announcement, Wiz evokes incarcerated Harlem rapper Max B whose melodic style had long been labeled and associated with "wave" and "wavy."

"Please don't take the wave," Wiz wrote, less than hour after Kanye's initial tweet. "Max B is the wavy one. He created the wave," Khlaifa continued. "There is no wave without him."

Later on in the night, Kanye acknowledged the shared terminology, writing, "All respect to Andre Harrel and Max B #Waves" to which Wiz replied "Yea aight."

From Wiz to French Montana, Max B's style has influenced many modern artists and helped to shape part of the modern hip-hop sounds today. It would seem that Wiz wanted Kanye to either credit Max B sooner for the title, work with the rapper in some fashion or emulate him with proper attribution. "He's the reason I sing on all my songs. That's the wave. If theres nothing wit that sound ITS NOT WAVY," he wrote.

While Wiz and Kanye operate in separate regions of hip-hop, their stars passed briefly in 2012 when Kanye name dropped Khalifa on "Cold" rapping, "And the whole industry want to fuck your old chick/Only nigga I got respect for is Wiz," in reference to Kanye's ex and then Wiz flame Amber Rose.
