Serena Williams Talks Black Women’s Health In Vogue

Serena Williams is on the cover of Vogue’s Magazine for the month of February! In her interview, the tennis star revealed the complications she faced after giving birth to her daughter, Olympia and how she wants to use her platform to bring attention to women’s health, Black women especially. Black women experience the highest mortality rates when giving birth.

She talks about having blood clots in her lungs and the pulmonary embolism she experienced just 2 days after giving birth. Her c-section wound opened from the intense coughing spells and after returning from surgery, they found that a large hematoma had flooded her abdomen. Serena came home a week later but spent the first six weeks of motherhood unable to get out of bed.

“No one talks about the low moments—the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry. I’ve broken down I don’t know how many times. Why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.” Serena Says.
