MLK Jr. Park's multi-million dollar splash pad finally opened over the weekend! But will this $4.5 million dollar investment earn the park's patrons' respect? Or will we continue to trash OUR park and force it to close?

As the old saying goes: "Better late than never"!

On Friday, May 31, the city of Buffalo opened up the largest splash pad in New York State! The new water basin located in MLK Jr. Park features 300 water fountains with 15-foot-high water sprays to play in during the summer. In the winter, the shallow water will freeze up to create an ice rink!

The new splash pad is part of the overall makeover for the MLK Jr. Park neighborhood. Since 2006, the city has invested:

  • $350,000 for picnic shelters;
  • $800,000 for MLK Jr. Park shelter house improvements;
  • $16 million for St. Martin Village Project; and
  • $2.1 million to demolish 131 blighted structures in the area.

The park features beautiful areas for fun in the sun and picnics in the shade. They even have a botanical garden that provides educational entertainment!

But STILL, people who visited the park this weekend continue to disrespect it! According to the MLK Jr. Park Facebook page, visitors trashed the picnic areas, parked cars on the beautiful grass and even had the nerve to DRIVE THROUGH the park!!
