January 21st is a date that we will all remember as President Obama celebrates the beginning of his historic second term in office on Martin Luther King’s National Day of Service.
But before Barack Obama was a popular name in Politics, before MLK Day was a Federal Holiday, this date belonged to a New York Native that forever changed the sound of hip-hop.
Jam Master Jay was born on Jan. 31 1965 in Brooklyn New York. He died on Oct 30 2002. He would be 48 today!
JMJ began DJing at age 13 in addition to playing the trumpet, guitar and drums. In 1982 he joined Run DMC, the biggest hip-hop group of the 80’s who brought rap music into the mainstream music.
To this day popular artists and DJ’s credit JMJ as their inspiration. Check out this classic footage of Grand Master Flash and Jam Master Jay on MTV.
