The Northeast Kidney Foundation of Greater Buffalo will hold its 2014 Walk for Kidneys/Tim Oehmler Memorial 5K Run Sunday, June 15, at Delaware Park in Buffalo. Run registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. Walk/skate registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk/skate starts at 10:30 a.m. To register, volunteer or to receive more information, visit www.healthykidneys.org or call 716-512-7918.

The fundraising event raises money to bring free kidney screenings to the Buffalo community, and it enables the foundation to provide patient support, outreach, education and research.

A butterfly release will take place at the start of the walk to celebrate the life and to commemorate the lives of people lost to kidney disease. The festivities will include activities for children, entertainment, raffles and a Unyts blood drive. Free admission to the Buffalo Zoo will be provided after the walk.

The event also features music from the band Lower Town Trio. All skaters who raise $50 or more will receive two tickets to the roller derby bout on June 28 when the Lake Effect Flurries take on Burning River (Cleveland).

Event sponsors include ECMC, FreedMaxick, UNYTS, DaVita and Questcor.

The mission of the Northeast Kidney Foundation is to improve the lives of those affected by kidney disease and related conditions; to increase organ donation; and to empower those it serves to be effective voices for better health care at the local, state and federal levels.
